For more than 15 years, ColWell Refrigeration has delivered commercial refrigeration projects across the Greater Toronto Area and other regions of Ontario. Our experience spans food retail, cold storage, and distribution projects of many sizes, including full supermarket developments, relocations, facility upgrades, and complete refrigeration work in facilities exceeding 100,000 square feet.
We remain involved from system planning and equipment selection through installation, commissioning, controls, monitoring, and preventive maintenance. This gives clients a team that understands how each system was built and can provide faster, more informed support throughout its operating life.
When refrigeration fails, product is at risk, operations are disrupted, and every hour matters. ColWell looks beyond the equipment to how the entire facility operates. Our field experience helps us consider performance, service access, energy use, and daily demands together, so the system supports the business it was built to protect.
ColWell was founded with a practical vision: to support commercial food businesses with refrigeration systems built for daily operation.
From the beginning, we focused on supermarkets, cold storage facilities, and food distribution operations, where refrigeration is essential to business continuity. These environments required more than basic cooling. They needed centralized rack systems that could protect product integrity, support efficient operations, and deliver dependable performance over time.
As our experience grew, so did the scale and complexity of the projects we supported across the GTA and Ontario.
Our work expanded to regional grocery chains, refrigerated warehouses, food and seafood processing facilities, and distribution operations, deepening our understanding of changing loads, multiple temperature zones, strict requirements, and continuous daily demand. That experience shaped an approach built around how each facility operates, not simply the equipment it contains.
Around 2017, as the refrigeration industry moved toward natural refrigerants, environmental responsibility, and long term efficiency, ColWell began deepening its knowledge of CO₂ systems for supermarkets and cold chain operations.
By studying how these systems were developed and applied, we built the technical understanding needed to help clients plan ahead. This was not about following a trend, but preparing for the direction of commercial refrigeration and supporting solutions that balance performance, reliability, sustainability, and long term planning.
As ColWell’s workload grew, the team expanded from a small workforce with limited capacity into a broader field team supported by stronger project coordination.
This growth allowed us to manage more active sites, support larger construction scopes, and take on more demanding refrigeration projects across supermarkets, cold storage, food processing, and distribution facilities. By this stage, ColWell could deliver larger and more complex projects while maintaining the technical consistency, responsiveness, and accountability that had guided the company from the beginning.
ColWell Refrigeration is a partner of Hillphoenix, one of North America’s leading commercial refrigeration manufacturers. This partnership combines Hillphoenix equipment, display cases, and CO₂ technology with ColWell’s experience in project delivery, installation, controls, and ongoing service across Ontario.
For supermarkets, cold storage facilities, food processors, and distribution operations, this means equipment can be selected for actual operating needs, integrated into the wider system, and supported after installation. The partnership also strengthens our ability to respond to changing refrigerant standards, environmental expectations, and refrigeration technologies with systems designed for reliable long term operation.

ColWell’s project experience covers two essential parts of the food supply chain: supermarkets and cold storage facilities. Retail refrigeration must support display cases, backroom storage, multiple temperature zones, and frequent product access, while cold storage requires larger refrigerated spaces, loading activity, inventory movement, and consistent conditions.
Working across both markets has given our team a practical understanding of how equipment, capacity, and system configuration must match each facility. Our experience includes full store supermarket installations, centralized rack systems, and refrigerated warehouse applications designed to protect and move products effectively.
We specialize in supermarket rack systems, refrigerated warehouses, walk-in coolers and freezers, display cases, and condensing units. Our team primarily supports mid- to large-scale commercial facilities where system stability, redundancy, and energy performance are critical to daily operations.
Yes. In addition to commercial refrigeration, we provide HVAC installation, service, and system integration for commercial and industrial facilities. This allows us to coordinate mechanical performance across both refrigeration and climate control systems when required.
We support new construction projects as well as system retrofits and component replacements. Many clients choose phased upgrades; such as rack rebuilds, control upgrades, or compressor replacements. This benefits customers by extending refrigeration life and improving efficiency without a full system replacement.
Our clients include supermarkets, food distribution centers, refrigerated warehouses, food processing facilities, and other commercial operations where temperature control directly impacts inventory integrity and compliance standards.
Yes. We provide 24/7 emergency response services within the Toronto area. Our goal is rapid diagnosis and system stabilization to minimize downtime and reduce the risk of product loss.
Yes. We regularly collaborate with general contractors, electricians, controls specialists, and facility managers to ensure refrigeration systems integrate smoothly within broader construction or renovation timelines.
We work with trusted commercial refrigeration manufacturers, including Hillphoenix and other industry-recognized brands. Equipment selection is based on application type, system capacity requirements, and long-term operational goals.
We evaluate system age, failure frequency, energy performance, refrigerant condition, and overall operational reliability. In many cases, targeted retrofits or structured maintenance programs can extend useful life before full replacement is required.
Yes. Our preventive maintenance programs include scheduled inspections, performance checks, refrigerant management, and system calibration to reduce unexpected breakdowns and protect operational continuity.
You can contact our team through the website form or by phone. We will review your system type, facility size, and operational needs before providing a structured proposal.
